Armenian-born contemporary jazz musician Tigran Hamasyan is considered one of the most remarkable and distinctive jazz-meets-rock pianists/composers of his generation. Born with a strong sense of his heritage, Hamasyan embellishes his odd-metered music with a human voice, the cornerstone of his sound. Seamlessly fusing potent jazz improvisation and progressive rock with the rich folkloric music of his hometown of Gyurmi, Hamasyan brings a deep well of inspiration and technical expertise to his songs. These melodies feel like they could belong to a farmer humming as they till the soil. And so at some point, you can barely call what Hamasyan is doing jazz anymore. An undeniable part of Hamasyan's music is his strong sense of rhythm, a-la the extreme Swedish metal band, Meshuggah, whom he has credited many times over as the main inspiration for his rhythmic sound. Hamasyan's music is heavy, and it's not unusual to find a headbanging audience at one of his very dynamic live performances. Occasionally, he uses a whispered form of beat-boxing to keep time, but also acts as a percussion instrument, all while playing in a time signature of 35/16. All of these elements come together to form Hamasyan's sound. Although his musical sensibility has been studied by students all over the world and attempted to be replicated by many admirers, ultimately the essence of his sound lies within the heart, throat, and fingers of this one individual. We are so honored to present Tigran Hamasyan on Audiotree From Nothing.
